Attention Deficit

by Tony Steward on April 22, 2008

Many theorists and authors have written about how our culture is moving from the modern age into the information age. Where the exponential rate of technology, communication and our participation in it is bombarding us with thousands of more pieces of information to interact with every day.

The advent of the RSS feed, which is best explained as auto-mated web browsing by it’s founder Dave Winer, has only made it easy to be swarmed with information. Tech bloggers like Robert Scoble have entire careers spent in RSS feeds (he subscribes to over 600 websites), social networks (facebook) and micro-media (twitter) that has made information immediate, global and constant.

There are even services now that combine all of these channels (Friendfeed and SocialThing), where you can see what all of your real and virtual connections are producing and distributing through out the internet.

The most valuable skill set for the next century with be a combination of highly advanced information capture and filtering methods coupled with a rigid sense of prioritization in where your attention will be spent. Money is not the most valuable commodity, and NEITHER is TIME! Your attention is your most valuable commodity.

Of course all of use have a limited amount of time, but our attention is how we spend our time and what we spend it on. Are you glued to your computer most hours of the day reading RSS feeds, sending twitters and filtering email vs. stopping the gerbil wheel at a specific time and “going dark” to be with your family and friends?

And I mean really be there. Not be in their company giving partial attention while taking pictures with your camera phone to send to Facebook mobile, to twitter the event and to check your email while having a conversation over sms with someone who isn’t even there.

This may sound drastic, and to those being left behind in most of the technology jumps right now it seems ludicrous. But interaction like this will become the norm in less than 15 years.

This whole trend and my processing of it has been why my blog posts have been less frequent over the past week. Instead of just wanting to push any and everything online to keep up in comparison to other bloggers and individuals frequency of posting to the internet - I wanted to wait until I had something I thought was worth saying. I wanted to actually turn my phone off and enjoy an evening with my wife and children. I wanted to re-evaluate the pressure to document everything going on through text, picture and video - instead of just being fully present - no matter where I was.

That is my challenge to you. The internet is not going away, and neither is the escalation in the generation and distribution of information. And in some ways it is a good thing - I am a fan of accessibility and online community and the benefits that come from it. At the same time I want to be fully present in my life to the faith, life, love and family that I have with me.

Where is your attention being spent?
