Write blog posts like a pro!

First Moves

My first steps are to think up a topic, translate that into a good title, and then find a suitable Creative Commons photo on Flickr. That’s right off the bat, and that’s what gets things going. I think a solid title from the topic is my first start, because I’m trying to tempt you to read through on your reader of choice. The picture? I forget where, but someone nice told me a picture with a post draws our attention, and I agree.

I agree with the picture suggestion from Chris and have heard over and over again the importance of the post title and first paragraph. Maybe that is why a lot of my posts are just a title and a first paragraph! lol

What do you think? Of the blogs you read what do you like the most?

The title is definitely important because I am reading hundreds of RSS feeds and if the Title doesn’t catch my attention, it is very easy for me to skip over the post. There are a few blogs that I read religiously, but I don’t have time to read every word of every blog. The title catches my attention and if the first paragraph bores me and it looks long, I might skip it or flag it for later reading. Pictures are catchy, but not always what I am looking for. If you put too much media in a post and it slows down the load, I might get impatient and move on as well.
I personally do not have a set blogging ritual. I find that I am using Twitter more for short snippets and links now, and only blog when I want to invest time in the content.

Personally, when it comes down to it, I think that content is king. If the catchy title and first paragraph bring me to nothing but fluff, I migt skip through the posts more frequently and give up reading that blog all together.

Chris Walker’s points are all great. I think he’s got the perfect addition to the post. Glad you shared it, Tony. Brought even more folks into the conversation. : )
